Journals - African Development

Students from the Contemporary Issues through Videoconferencing course talked once again to Denis Okema (first time was back in December 2013 about his ordeal as a child soldier). This conference was on the development of Africa from the days of imperialism to the present. Denis explained the problems as they exist today and touched upon several current concerns such as the Boko Haram kidnapping of 200 girls, the governmental failure in Zimbabwe and the problems in Mali. My students have quite a bond with Denis and they were happy to once again talk with him!

"I know I don't only speak for myself when I say that Denis is a huge inspiration for me. As a former child soldier, Denis has dedicated his life to bettering himself and motivating my generation to be impactful, positive future leaders. He wants Uganda (where he is from) and other countries in Africa to prosper, have enough to eat everyday and be safe in their homes. Denis has led us to believe that we hold influence over these things, and together we can change the world for the better!" - Megan
